“Sand painting”, also called the “art of sand animation", is a very unique form of painting. The technique produces aesthetic and lively, yet fleeting images. The motifs blend into one another,
producing constantly changing, surprising scenes.
Weißensee’s technique involves spreading fine sand on a glass panel atop a light box, then using her fingers to draw in the sand in rhythm to music. What results are picture stories, which she films while transferring the images in real time to a screen, video wall, or LED display.
When performing at night, Weißensee creates magic with this art form, leaving audiences spellbound. She is one of only a handful of artists who have completely mastered this unique art. It was completely unknown to German audiences in 2007 when she introduced sand painting to them with her sand story "Somewhere".
